Chemrez Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of D&L Industries, Inc., has been recognized with two major distinctions at the Philippine Coconut Authority’s (PCA) inaugural Coconut Industry Sustainability (COINS) Awards, held during National Coconut Week.

Chemrez was named Most Diversified and Innovative Large Coconut Enterprise and Most Socially Responsible Enterprise, solidifying its role as one of the leading drivers of innovation, sustainability, and community development in the Philippine coconut sector.

    Recognizing Industry Leadership

The PCA launched the COINS Awards to highlight enterprises that embody innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in the country’s coconut industry. In honoring organizations with strong community linkages and forward-looking practices, the awards aim to encourage greater competitiveness and resilience in a sector that remains vital to millions of Filipinos.

Chemrez stood out for both its extensive product diversification and its social impact programs. For more than four decades, the company has pioneered higher-value applications of coconut oil, expanding its uses well beyond traditional food products. Its innovations now touch markets as diverse as clean energy, personal care, health, and wellness.

    Most Diversified and Innovative Enterprise

The recognition for Most Diversified and Innovative Large Coconut Enterprise was conferred in acknowledgment of Chemrez’s track record of industry firsts. In 2006, the company established Asia’s first continuous Coco Methyl Ester (CME) or biodiesel plant, becoming a foundation for the Philippines’ biodiesel industry. To date, the facility supplies about 40 percent of the country’s biodiesel requirement.

Chemrez has since broadened its reach into coco-derived functional ingredients, producing inputs for global brands in personal care, home care, and wellness. Its customers include some of the world’s best-known multinational companies, underscoring Chemrez’s stature as a trusted supplier of sustainable, coconut-based ingredients on the international stage.

    Commitment to Social Responsibility

Equally noteworthy was the Most Socially Responsible Enterprise Award, which highlighted Chemrez’s extensive work with farming communities and grassroots organizations. Much of this work is carried out through the Lao Foundation, Inc., the social development arm of D&L Industries.

The Foundation’s programs focus on three pillars: education, values formation, and livelihood training. Scholarships have been provided to children of coconut farmers through partnerships with noted institutions such as Don Bosco and Dualtech. These initiatives combine financial assistance with hands-on training at Chemrez plants, equipping students with both skills and employment opportunities.

Beyond scholarships, the Lao Foundation also runs livelihood programs for residents near Chemrez facilities. These are focused on offering practical training that opens pathways to sustainable income. The initiatives are designed to build skills and income-generating capacities in local communities while encouraging long-term development.

    Strengthening Farmers and Cooperatives

At the industry level, Chemrez has been proactive in linking copra-based cooperatives directly with private-sector markets, giving smallholder farmers greater access and bargaining power. The company also works in concert with the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI) and the PCA to provide coconut farmers with valuable strategic planning and social enterprise management skills.

These initiatives underscore Chemrez’s view that inclusive growth is central to the long-term health of the coconut industry. Equipping farmers with “big picture” enterprise skills and connecting them to markets is seen as vital in creating a more resilient and competitive value chain within the domestic coconut industry.

Building on a Legacy of Innovation

The twin PCA awards affirm Chemrez’s longstanding reputation as both an innovator and part of a socially responsible corporate citizenry. Over four decades, the company has consistently moved the Philippine coconut industry from being a raw material supplier to a provider of higher-value products with global relevance.

Chemrez has taken a multifaceted approach to achieve this outcome, from pioneering biodiesel production to supplying ingredients for consumer goods worldwide. In all these initiatives, Chemrez has consistently demonstrated the potential of coconut oil as a platform for sustainable growth.

The company’s efforts are complemented by its subsidiary, Natura Aeropack Corporation, which operates an integrated facility in Batangas. The site consolidates multiple operations, including sourcing, formulation, packaging, and exports under one roof, giving Chemrez and Natura Aeropack the capability to deliver their global clientele end-to-end solutions for sustainable and natural coconut-based products.
